Eco-pastoralism at Didier Créche Farm on the Loire River
Eco-pastoralism on the Loire River: A case study in biodiversity conservation and sustainable sheep farming in France
or
Detail description
100 hectares of grassland along the Loire River in Loir-et-Cher, France, managed by Didier Créche since 1999 under the Pasto’Loire project. The site, part of a 142-hectare area, uses 220 Solognote ewes to maintain open landscapes, prevent shrub encroachment, and support biodiversity. Grazing runs from mid-April to early September across five plots, with seasonal rotation and shaded river-edge areas. The project prioritises ecological restoration over financial gain, with the farmer receiving only a €20,000/year MAE allowance. Challenges include long travel distances, lack of compensation, and limited institutional support. As Didier approaches retirement, concerns remain about the long-term viability of such eco-pastoralism for younger farmers without stronger financial incentives and clearer policy frameworks.
