Maximum grazing use through controlled calving

Kalvning i november för maximal utnyttjande av bete och mjölkproduktion

or

Detail description

Martin's organic farm uses synchronized calving in late November to maximize grazing efficiency, enabling calves to graze early and reducing pasture damage from dry cows in autumn. Calving occurs between October and January, with grazing starting mid-April using daily paddock rotations. The farm achieves 250,000 kg of milk production through strategic grassland management, optimizing pasture use and animal health. Key practices include monitoring grass growth, which doubles weekly in spring, peaking at 1,600 kg DM/ha/week. The goal is to extend grazing to 20 October, improve milk yield per hectare (20,000 SEK/ha), and maintain simple, efficient operations. Calving timing supports better calf health by allowing full cleaning and disinfection of calving pens. Challenges include achieving target calving dates and managing breeding timing. The farm prioritizes resource efficiency, animal welfare, and sustainable milk production.
