Higher within-herd diversity linked to stable milk production

Greater within-herd diversity linked to lower milk yield variability in Pays de Saint-Flour compared to Bocage Bourbonnais

or

Detail description

Higher within-herd diversity correlates with lower interannual milk yield variability. In the Pays de Saint-Flour (n=61), the diversity index was 4.0 [3.8–4.4], with lower yield variability (347 kg [270–432]) compared to the Bocage Bourbonnais (n=31; index 3.65 [3.4–3.7]; variability 523 kg [436–642]). Data from 92 dairy herds (2000–2014) show a negative relationship between diversity and yield variability (R² = 0.2403, y = -1098 + 172.6x).
