Agroforestry in arable farming: farmer experiences and tree choices

Second-year agroforestry project on arable farm with hazelnut, walnut, and other tree species

or

Detail description

Agroforestry on arable farms: Lizele Vos and Roy Michielsen from ERKuzen have been planting trees since March 2021, focusing on hazelnuts, walnuts, chestnuts, and figs. The project, supported by ERF and the HEV foundation, aims to enhance sustainability, biodiversity, and farm efficiency. After two years, the design has been simplified, with two rows of walnut and one of hazel trees on about two hectares. The farmers report positive business prospects, with returns comparable to conventional farming despite higher initial investment. The initiative demonstrates how farmer-led choices can drive sustainable agricultural innovation.
