Deep-rooted species capture nutrients, prevent erosion, and contribute to nitrogen fixation and atmospheric nitrogen capture. With 2 million hectares—20% of agricultural land—dedicated to agroforestry, potential annual carbon sequestration ranges from 0.4 to 4.0 million tons CO₂, depending on design and management. Fast-growing species like poplars and willows maximise biomass and carbon storage, especially when used in long-term applications such as construction.
