Slurry injection in Friesian peat bogs: impacts on soil crusting, drying, and earthworm availability for wading birds

or

Detail description

Slurry injection in Friesian peat bogs since the 1990s improves nitrogen use and grass growth but may increase soil crusting, drying, and CO₂ emissions. Field trials (2021–2022) compare injection with and without soil cutting versus surface application and artificial fertiliser. Results suggest soil cutting may reduce earthworm availability for wading birds due to harder soil, while injection may enhance nitrogen uptake and reduce ammonia loss. Concerns remain over potential toxicity to earthworms.
