125 years of Staatsbosbeheer on Texel: history, ecology and celebration

In 2024, Staatsbosbeheer celebrated its 25th anniversary with special events in Drenthe and on Texel. The initiative to plant 500 hectares of mixed woodland in 1895 failed due to waterlogged soil, but the planting of pine trees in 1899 and subsequent additions, such as Picea alba, created a sustainable forest environment. Although timber extraction remained limited, the forest became increasingly important for ecology and recreation. In Kootwijk, 2,700 hectares of heathland and sand dunes were purchased in 1897 to promote forestry. Staatsbosbeheer took over management, which led to a decline in the number of black grouse that were damaging young trees. To mark the anniversary, 28 Van Gogh trees were planted, walks were organised, a National Tree Day was held on 20 November, and five autumn debates took place at Groenheuvel Castle. These activities highlight the role of forest management and education within the community.
