Integrating a biorefinery in a cooperative: olive tree leaves potential

The cooperative–biorefinery–technology alliance enables sustainable valorisation of olive leaf waste for high-value bioproducts.

Detail description

Olive oil production generates large amounts of lignocellulosic by-products, particularly olive leaves, which hold high potential for biofuel and high-value bioproducts. This project integrates on-site biorefineries within a cooperative’s industrial complex to valorise these waste streams, enabling sustainable production of oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol, and triterpenes for food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic applications. Through collaboration with technology partners, the cooperative enhances logistics, reduces costs, and creates new revenue streams. The model supports the EU bioeconomy by transforming waste into high-value products at the source of biomass generation, demonstrating a profitable, scalable, and sustainable business approach. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Programme.
