BBTs Roadmap Implementation in Greece

Identification of optimal bio-based technologies for Central Macedonia, Crete, and Peloponnese based on regional agricultural and forestry dynamics

or

Detail description

The BBioNets project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe (Cluster 6), advances bio-based technologies (BBTs) in agriculture and forestry across six regional networks in Ireland, Spain, Italy, Greece, Poland, and the Czech Republic. Running from 1 November 2023 to 31 October 2026, the initiative, coordinated by Munster Technological University, promotes circular economy practices by valorising agricultural and forest biomass. With a budget of €1,998,636.20, it collaborates with EIP-AGRI Operational Groups to identify region-specific needs, prioritise BBTs, and share practical knowledge. In Greece, olive cultivation—featuring 160 million trees and yielding nearly 400,000 tons annually—drives the adoption of five validated BBTs: E567-OleoValoriza/OLIV2 (composting olive residues), E582-OLUHERB/OLIVE (olive leaf infusions and additives), DE4-Lignocellulosic Biorefinery/LIGNO (anaerobic digestion of woody residues), PL100-Polski Ochet Owocowy/Vinegar (fruit vinegar production), and CZ109-TH-Compost_biochar/COMP (biochar-enhanced composting). These technologies reduce waste, lower costs, and diversify farm income while supporting sustainable value chains.
