Planting trees and irrigation to improve grassland in Alqueva region

Sustainable agroforestry and climate adaptation at Herdade da Coitadinha in the Alentejo region

or

Detail description

Herdade da Coitadinha in Barrancos, Portugal, covers 1000 hectares within the Noudar Natural Park. Managed by EDIA, it integrates agroforestry, livestock, hunting, and eco-tourism. The project offsets environmental impacts from the Alqueva dam, completed in 2010. Current focus includes studying cork oak and holm oak resilience to climate change using drip irrigation. An almond grove enhances soil quality, biodiversity, and grazing areas. The farm raises local cattle and pigs seasonally. Funded by the European Union.
