William Dennehy, a pasture-based dairy farmer in Co. Kerry, extended his grazing season by installing narrow spur roadways to access remote paddocks. These cow-track-sized pathways, built from subsoil and pencil trunking, allow controlled grazing across four paddocks, reducing pasture damage and eliminating reliance on silage. Installed along main roads or at their ends, the spurs enable year-round grazing, especially in spring and autumn, and improve nutrient cycling. The project, funded by the European Union and documented by Teagasc, enhances productivity and sustainability.
