Harrowing is a traditional mechanical weed control method widely used in organic cereal farming. It effectively targets early-stage annual dicotyledonous weeds, particularly during the white-thread to cotyledon stage. Success depends on optimal timing, soil moisture, harrow type (e.g. spring tine, rotary), depth, and speed. Multiple passes may be needed due to uneven weed emergence. While less effective on grasses and perennials, proper calibration reduces crop damage. Soil type and weather—especially dry conditions—significantly influence outcomes. Despite risks like soil compaction and disruption to ground-nesting wildlife, harrowing remains a key non-chemical practice, especially when tailored to crop stage and field conditions.
