Conservation Tillage for Soil and Weed Management

Conservation tillage reduces soil disturbance to enhance sustainability and soil health while requiring integrated weed management strategies.

or

Detail description

Conservation tillage minimizes soil disturbance through practices like minimum tillage, strip tillage, and no-till seeding, reducing erosion, improving moisture retention, and enhancing organic matter. It limits deep soil mixing, leading to weed seed accumulation in surface layers, increasing germination risk for annual species. Without mechanical disruption, perennial weeds may spread more aggressively. Effective control requires integrated strategies, including crop rotation and cover crops, with timing critical for success. Residues can suppress weeds by blocking light but also support natural predators. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme.
