Costs assessment of ammonia air treatment in pig livestock for nitrogen recovery
The document evaluates the economic performance and environmental benefits of an ammonia air treatment system installed in pig housing, which recovers nitrogen as ammonium sulfate fertilizer and reduces ammonia emissions by 54%. It estimates the treatment cost at 0.15–0.17 €/kg live weight, impacting meat sales value by 7.3%, and outlines installation costs for new and retrofitted barns.
Detail description
Ammonia pollution is a major challenge in pig farming, affecting air quality, animal and worker health and the environment. Conventional ventilation systems remove polluted air but don't capture ammonia. Now there's a smarter solution: the Gas Loop ammonia air washing unit.
This innovative system captures ammonia directly from the air in pig houses and absorbs it into a sulphuric acid solution. The result? Ammonium sulphate, a valuable liquid fertiliser that reduces the need for synthetic alternatives - cutting costs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
With an ammonia reduction of up to 62%, this technology improves pig health and air quality while promoting sustainable agriculture.
