Commonly used between flowering and harvest, it involves digging a soil pit and measuring root presence per cm² and root percentage per cm of depth. Suitable for agronomic and systems research, it provides in-depth insights into root growth patterns under real field conditions, though time-consuming and destructive, limiting its use in large-scale breeding. Typically takes 4 hours (1 hour digging, 3 hours measurement).
