Factsheet: Spanish Bioeconomy
or
Detail description
Spain’s bioeconomy represents ~6-7% of GDP and 9% of national employment, with ~1.44 million jobs and €69 billion value added. Total turnover is €236 billion (10% of national turnover), led by food, beverages & tobacco (55.8%) and agriculture (23.5%). Land cover is 50.1% forests/shrubland and 47.1% agriculture; although forestry supplies feedstock for pulp & paper and wood/furniture, it contributes only ~0.8-1% of bioeconomy turnover but holds growth potential via climate-adaptive, fire-resilient management. Employment is concentrated in agriculture (49.6%) and food/beverages/tobacco (31.7%), with smaller shares in wood/furniture, forestry, textiles, paper, biobased chemicals, and fisheries/aquaculture; policy frameworks include the 2015 National Bioeconomy Strategy, Spain Circular 2030, and the NECP with biogas and hydrogen roadmaps.
