Greek Bioeconomy: Sectoral Value, Employment, and Transition to Circular Models

Bioeconomy in Greece: sectors, employment, and value added in 2021

or

Detail description

The Greek bioeconomy is driven by food and agriculture, which supply around 90% of biomass for food and feed, and account for the majority of employment (672,000 people) and €12 billion in added value. Key sectors include forestry (6.6 million hectares), bioenergy, biomaterials, and waste management. While agriculture remains largely linear, efforts are increasing toward sustainability. Forestry holds significant untapped potential for sustainable biomass and rural development. Bioenergy and biomaterials are growing rapidly, supporting Greece’s low-carbon transition. Challenges include infrastructure gaps, funding access, and complex regulations.
