Agroecological Weed Control in Boreal Perennial Crops: Stakeholder Perceptions

Weed control in perennial crops: agroecological practices in the Boreal Region of Estonia

or

Detail description

Stakeholder perceptions of agroecological weed control in perennial crops across the Boreal Region (Estonia) reveal widespread adoption of mowing, mulching, and cover crops. Mowing under tree canopies produces green mulch and improves soil health. Organic and inorganic mulches suppress weed germination by blocking light. Bioherbicides and thermal control are less common but offer chemical-free alternatives. Grazing by sheep and chickens is used in organic orchards. Traditional methods remain preferred due to simplicity and effectiveness, while newer techniques face barriers from equipment requirements. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme (grant agreement No. 10103454).
