Field Peas and Cereals Intercropping: Pest and Disease Impact

Intercropping field peas with cereals enhances natural pest control and reduces disease pressure in agricultural systems

or

Detail description

Intercropping field peas with wheat or barley in Czech Republic trials (2023–2024) reduced cereal aphid populations and disease spread, primarily through enhanced natural pest control by beneficial insects like parasitic wasps and hoverflies. This approach lowered pesticide needs, improved crop health, and offered resilience against pests such as cereal weevils and wheat bulb flies. Disease suppression was observed for net blotch, leaf spot, and rusts, though weed control showed no significant difference. Optimal intercrop combinations remain to be identified for broader adoption. Funded by the European Union, UKRI, and Soil Association.
