Community-based natural resource management in Morocco

Community-based natural resource management in Morocco: the agdals of the High Atlas as a sustainable system of controlled grazing. A traditional pastoral management system integrating pasture regulation, biodiversity conservation and the resilience of rural communities. Based on local practices, the ‘egal pastoral’ system regulates access to resources through community assemblies (massas), female guardians (aissa) and annual opening and closing rules. Preservation of vegetation, biomass and pastoral productivity in the mountainous areas of the High Atlas.
