Installation of rock gabion check dams in burned mountainous streams to reduce erosion and sedimentation

Structural measures to mitigate post-fire hydrological risks in Cyprus using gabion check dams

or

Detail description

Following the 2021 Melini-Arakapas fire, Cyprus's Water Development Department and Forestry Department implemented rock-filled gabion check dams in burned mountainous catchments to reduce peak discharge, control erosion, and protect reservoirs. These structures, strategically placed in steep, high-erosion areas using GIS-based risk assessment, trap sediments and prevent downstream sedimentation, preserving the Kalavasos reservoir’s storage capacity and safeguarding water quality.
