Reactivation of abandoned farmlands in Denea, Cyprus, faced challenges due to invasive rodent populations exacerbated by a foreign military presence. To address this, the community implemented a nature-based solution using barn owls (Tyto alba) as biological pest controllers. Intensive nesting programs for barn owls have successfully reduced rodent numbers, offering a sustainable, eco-friendly alternative to chemical pesticides. This approach leverages the owls’ natural hunting behavior—capable of consuming up to 1,000 rodents annually per bird—while minimizing environmental and health risks. The strategy, which includes installing artificial nesting boxes, has proven effective in agricultural and urban settings, demonstrating high efficiency, low environmental impact, and long-term cost savings. The success in Denea offers a replicable model for communities confronting similar ecological and geopolitical challenges.
