CaVin: Hydrodynamic Cavitation for Vinasse Energy Valorisation
Enhancing methane yield from grape pomace through hydrodynamic cavitation pretreatment in a circular economy framework
or
Detail description
The CaVin project investigates hydrodynamic cavitation as a pretreatment method to enhance the energy potential of grape pomace for biogas production. Funded by the EU and regional programmes (2014–2020), it involves partners including CRPA, Azienda Agricola Fontana, and Cantine Riunite & CIV. The project focuses on improving methane yield from lignocellulosic waste such as grape pomace, vinasse, and other agricultural residues. Lab and real-scale tests using a manometric system with 64 reactors showed a 47% increase in methane production for cavitated substrates. Experiments, conducted on 17 December 2019 in Castel San Giovanni, assessed total solids (2–7%), granulometric analysis, and biochemical methane potential (BMP). CRPA LAB, led by Nicola Labartino and Sergio Piccinini, conducted environmental and energy analyses, supporting sustainable energy production and rural development in Emilia-Romagna.
