This report details the EIP Berg-Milchvieh project, focusing on reducing nitrogen losses and ammonia emissions in dairy farming. It analyzes ammonia emissions across stall, storage, and spreading phases, emphasizing best practices such as proper manure management, use of covered storage, efficient feeding, and weaning strategies. The study highlights that 94% of Austria’s ammonia emissions originate from agriculture, with over 60% from cattle farming and associated fertilizer management. Key findings show that composting systems with proper litter use and regular turning reduce emissions more effectively than traditional loose housing. Weidehaltung (pasture-based systems) significantly lower emissions due to separate urine and dung deposition. Technologies like liquid-solid separators and optimized spreading timing (cool, humid, low wind) further reduce emissions. The project identifies a potential 25–30 million euro savings in nitrogen loss costs by 2030, aligning with EU NEC Directive targets. Recommendations include improved stall design, use of urine-diverting systems, and adopting climate-smart practices across all farm phases.
