Improve Varroa management for Hessian beekeepers

Zur Verbesserung der Varroa-Management-Strategien für hessische Imkereibetriebe durch praxisnahe Diagnose- und Behandlungskonzepte

or

Detail description

This document presents practical innovations in Varroa mite management for Hessian beekeepers, focusing on effective diagnosis and treatment. It details a citizen science trial with 1,250 colonies demonstrating the efficacy of using screened bottom boards to prevent mite miscounting by ants and mites. The study evaluates oxalic acid treatments—dripping versus vaporizing—with field data indicating vaporizing is often more cost-effective. A prototype AI-based mite counter was developed at the Institute of Beekeeping. Three field trials tested treatment protocols, including a 25-day treatment window. Educational resources, including videos and guides, were created to support knowledge transfer from research to practice.
