Sustainable Livestock Breeding via Genotyping in Bavaria

Genotyping advances in Bavarian cattle and pig farming enhance breeding efficiency and resource use

or

Detail description

Genotyping in Bavarian cattle and pig farming improved breeding values from 87 (2019) to 112 (2022), enhanced resource efficiency, and enabled data-driven replacement strategies. Supported by the Bavarian State Ministry, 4,418 animals were genotyped, with 3,640 used in breeding value estimation. The initiative standardized genetic records, reduced costs, and established logistical frameworks for sample collection and data sharing via LKV Bayern. Adoption varied from 48% to 100% across farms. Results informed policy, supported ongoing expansion, and enabled economic and scientific follow-up, including paternal fertility data. Bureaucratic hurdles with EIP funding were noted.
