Shanakyle Bog Restoration and Habitat Enhancement EIP Final Project

Restores 30 acres of degraded raised and cutover bog in County Clare through rewetting and biodiversity enhancement

or

Detail description

The Shanakyle Bog Restoration and Habitat Enhancement Project has successfully met its objectives within the planned time and budget. Thirty acres of degraded raised and cutover bog have been restored by installing peat dams, bunds, and overflow pipes, enabling the bog to transition back to an active raised bog. Creating a wildflower meadow, installing bird and bat roost boxes, controlling invasive species, and creating a wildlife pond have enhanced the habitat and provided a refuge for species of conservation concern. This project has demonstrated alternative land-use practices farmers can adopt to support biodiversity. It has also raised awareness locally and nationally about the benefits of peatland rewetting and habitat enhancement, inspiring other groups to start similar projects.
