Struvite from Livestock Manure: Emissions Reduction and Fertilizer Recovery
Struvite recovery system reduces ammonia and greenhouse gas emissions from livestock waste while producing sustainable fertilizer
or
Detail description
The Struvite Operational Group developed a farm-scale system to recover struvite from livestock effluent and digestates, reducing nitrogen and phosphorus levels to lower ammonia, methane, and nitrous oxide emissions. The process produces a renewable, slow-release fertilizer, offering a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizers in nutrient-deficient regions. The project, active from 2021 to 2023 in Emilia-Romagna, Italy, included prototype development, emission monitoring, sustainability assessments, and dissemination through training. Funded under Rural Development 2014–2020, it was coordinated by Centro Ricerche Produzioni Animali with a total budget of €185,819.96.
