Fecal examination for horse parasite egg counting
Quantitative faecal egg counting using the MacMaster technique for equine parasite management
or
Detail description
A coproscopy procedure using the MacMaster technique analyzes horse manure to quantify parasite eggs—such as those from strongyles, ascaris, and strongyloides—guiding targeted deworming. Fresh manure is weighed (3g), mixed with flotation liquid (e.g., saturated saltwater), filtered, and examined under a 10x microscope after 10 minutes. Egg counts are multiplied by 50 to estimate eggs per gram (epg). A threshold of 200 epg is commonly used for small strongyles, but decisions should consider epidemiological context and veterinary advice. Published by IFCE in April 2025.
