Purple garlic from Las Pedroñeras (PGI), Castilla-La Mancha

Purple garlic from Las Pedroñeras, a variety protected as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) since 2008, originating from the province of Cuenca in Castilla-La Mancha. It is grown in municipalities such as Las Pedroñeras, La Alberca del Záncara and Mota del Cuervo, with a medium growing cycle, an average yield of 9–13 t/ha and specific requirements regarding irrigation and soil. It is noted for its intense aroma, moderate pungency, high sulphur compound content and use in traditional dishes such as ajoarriero. The crop is planted in autumn and harvested in spring. The product is marketed through the COOPAMAN cooperative, with a 67% increase in exports during the pandemic. In 2020, the sector generated €46 million and employed over 500 people.
