PROGRAILIVE: Protein from Legumes for Livestock

Producing high-protein feed from legumes to boost livestock self-sufficiency in western France

or

Detail description

Production PROtein GRAIn for LIVEstock – a four-year project (2016–2020) led by Brittany and Pays de la Loire regions to boost regional protein self-sufficiency in livestock farming. Focused on legumes including peas, lupins, and vetch, the initiative enhances feed autonomy with high-protein crops (peas: 21%, vetch: 27%, lupins: 34%). These crops improve soil health, reduce nitrogen needs, and support sustainable rotations. The project promotes intercropping systems (e.g., pea/oat, lupin/triticale) and includes up to 35% inclusion rates in animal diets. Involving 20+ partners across agriculture, research, and innovation, it aims to strengthen regional food systems and reduce reliance on imported protein.
