Electrolysed Water as Alternative to Iodophores for Mastitis Prevention in Dairy Cattle

Reducing iodine contamination in milk through electrolysed water as an alternative to iodophore-based udder disinfectants in dairy farming

or

Detail description

Mastitis is the leading disease in dairy cattle, causing up to 40% of all pathologies and major economic losses. This project evaluates electrolysed water as a viable alternative to iodophore-based disinfectants for pre- and post-dipping during milking. It assesses technical and economic feasibility, monitors mastitis prevalence and somatic cell counts, and validates effectiveness across seasons. The study confirms electrolysed water's efficacy in reducing mastitis without increasing iodine in milk, supporting its adoption as a sustainable, chemical-free solution. Completed in 2022 under the 2019 pilot innovation programme.
