Improving Organic Table Grape Shelf Life with BlowDevice® Packaging

Sustainable organic grape and cherry farming in Apulia using innovative packaging and climate-resilient practices

or

Detail description

This project evaluates sustainable practices for organic table grapes and cherries in Apulia, Italy, focusing on cost efficiency, environmental impact, and innovation. A key outcome is the BlowDevice® packaging label, which extends shelf life through controlled gas exchange, reducing reliance on chemical preservatives. Economic analysis shows a 21% cost reduction post-implementation, with €25,000/ha revenue. Environmental benefits include 1–24% lower energy use, 25–49% improved water and soil quality, and no negative impact on air quality or biodiversity. Funded by the EU Horizon Europe programme (2019–2023, €495,000), the project supports climate adaptation, organic farming, on-farm composting, and water-efficient decision systems, with findings transferable to other Mediterranean regions.
