Targeted Selective Treatment for Grazing Lambs Using Weight Data

Targeted selective treatment using weight data to optimize anthelmintic use in grazing lambs, reducing drug resistance and environmental impact. The TECHCARE project implements an algorithm that links individual lamb identity via EID tags (PA16) to weight and target gain data collected through EID-enabled scales (PA17). Lambs are weighed in a crate that automatically identifies animals and determines treatment needs based on performance. Underperforming lambs are drafted for treatment using automatic gates, minimizing unnecessary drug use. The system supports improved animal welfare, cost efficiency, and prolonged drug efficacy. Calibration and maintenance ensure data accuracy. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Programme (grant agreement No. 862050).
