Grapevine Trunk Diseases: Symptoms and Distribution in Australia

Trunk diseases in Australian vineyards: causes, symptoms, and management strategies

or

Detail description

Grapevine trunk diseases, including botryosphaeria and eutypa dieback, are major threats to Australian vineyards. Caused by *Botryosphaeriaceae* and *Eutypa lata*, they lead to cankers, vascular damage, yield loss, and vine decline. Symptoms vary by pathogen, with foliar issues and bunch drop in eutypa dieback. Distribution correlates with climate—*Eutypa lata* in cool, wet areas; *Botryosphaeriaceae* in warmer zones. A 2007–2011 survey in NSW identified 1,258 isolates, including 12 *Eutypa lata* cases. Management includes dormant pruning, removal of infected wood, and fungicides like copper. Research continues on biological controls and resistant rootstocks. Findings supported by NSW Government and Grapevine Trunk Disease Research Group.
