White Lupin Cultivation for Organic Farming

White lupin cultivation revival through anthracnose-tolerant varieties and sustainable farming practices

or

Detail description

White lupin is a cold-tolerant, nitrogen-fixing legume offering high protein content and strong weed suppression, ideal for organic crop rotations. Anthracnose, a fungal disease, previously halted its cultivation in Switzerland. Breeding has produced tolerant varieties like 'Frieda' and 'Celina', enabling revival. Use certified seeds, avoid high lime soils, and grow in dry, windy conditions with pH <7. Benefits include yields of 3–4 t/ha, early nectar provision for pollinators, and reduced need for nitrogen fertiliser. Suitable for pure stands and organic systems.
