This study investigates the impact of long-distance transport on calves' blood parameters, focusing on metabolic and stress indicators in unweaned dairy calves. Calves were transported for 12 hours after a 16-hour fast, with milk replacer and water provided pre- and during transit. Blood samples taken at reception and after transport showed no significant changes in stress, immune function, or muscle damage markers. Mild dehydration and hypoglycemia were observed, suggesting that prolonged fasting—rather than transport conditions—was the primary physiological stressor. Findings support current management protocols at reception centers and during transport, indicating that existing practices are effective in minimizing adverse health effects. The results highlight the importance of maintaining nutritional and hydration protocols to support calf welfare and productivity in the beef sector.
