New pruning method for fertigated Cork Oak to enhance trunk quality

Pruning strategy for high-quality cork oak timber production with accelerated growth and straight trunk development

or

Detail description

Fertigated cork oak (Quercus suber L.) trees are pruned to enhance cork and acorn production, improve sunlight penetration, and promote a single, straight trunk. In the REGASUBER case study, a modified pruning approach prioritizes quality timber by removing branches at acute angles to maintain apical dominance. Early and annual pruning is essential under optimized irrigation and fertilization to ensure straight trunk development. This innovation, led by ANSUB and supported by OG GO REGACORK in Portugal, aims to produce taller trees with greater trunk diameter and minimal branching.
