Technological Cooperation in Spanish Tomato Processing Industry

Promoting quality, innovation, and collaboration in Spain's processing tomato sector since 1980

or

Detail description

Since the 1980s, tomato producers and processors in Spain have collaborated through Mesa del Tomate, an association ensuring quality standards, including pesticide residue-free production, conflict resolution, and technological cooperation. Funded by members proportionally to output, it supports R&D initiatives in Extremadura, where 76% of Spain’s processing tomatoes are grown. Since 2001, a partnership with CTAEX has driven innovation in varieties, processing efficiency, and technology transfer, boosting yields from 93 to 93 tonnes per hectare by 2014. Spain ranks fourth globally in processing tomato production, exporting primarily to France, the UK, Germany, and Italy.
