NEWCOTIANA aims to modify the composition and therefore the use we make of tobacco plants, replacing nicotine with substances with high added value used in medicine and cosmetics. To do this, a group of researchers will work on the adaptation of new technologies such as genetic editing using the CRISPR/Cas9 system, which allows the modification of the genome with high precision, and will apply them to the improvement of the genome of tobacco and other related species. In this way, the aim is to revalue traditional tobacco cultivation, providing it with new uses compatible with health and contributing to revitalizing tobacco-growing areas through the production of high added value products more in line with the knowledge economy.
