The potential of NBTs for breeding industrial crops of the genus Nicotiana was evaluated. Two plant species were employed, namely Nicotiana tabacum (traditional cultivated tobacco) and Nicotiana benthamiana (Australian dwarf tobacco). GM Nicotiana benthamina plants employed as production platforms of recombinant proteins in GMO-authorized indoor facilities are not considered in this report. GM Nicotiana tabacum plants (gene-edited and intragenic) were studied both indoors and in open-field trials.
