HNV pastures in Sardinia show rapid ecological changes within five years of abandonment, including increased vegetation height, declining soil organic matter and nitrogen, and shifting microbial communities. Species diversity peaks at site B, with rising pH and stable cellulolytic microorganisms. Tree encroachment and poor recruitment drive transitions between grazed woodland, wooded pastureland, and open pastureland. Priority species like the Black Vulture, Little Bustard, and Mediterranean orchids require tailored conservation. A meta-analysis of 154 cases reveals variable biodiversity outcomes, rejecting one-size-fits-all approaches. Regional abandonment rates and spatial heterogeneity highlight the need for adaptive, species-specific management and socio-ecological interventions.
