Forest fire prevention in Kythira through community and science collaboration

Community-driven fire resilience through science and local engagement on Kythira island

or

Detail description

Proactive community engagement and scientific fire risk assessment reduced forest fire incidents on Kythira island, Greece, following a 2017 fire that destroyed nearly 10% of the land. Led by IMFE and HSPN, the 2019 project used GIS mapping, weather data, and G-FMIS simulations to identify high-risk zones. Targeted workshops educated locals, farmers, tourists, and officials, while volunteers implemented fuel reduction, reforestation, and building risk assessments across 610 properties. Despite challenges like apathy and pandemic disruptions, the island reported no major fires post-2017, demonstrating the effectiveness of localized, science-based prevention strategies. The initiative highlights the importance of post-disaster momentum, sustained investment, and tailored approaches to enhance resilience and support national fire management policies.
