Small Scale Weirs for Post-Fire Erosion and Flood Protection

Small-scale gabion check dams for post-wildfire erosion and flood control in Agios Stefanos, Greece

or

Detail description

Post-wildfire construction of small gabion check dams in Agios Stefanos, Attica, Greece, following the August 2009 wildfire. Four weirs—two 3-metre and two 2-metre high—were built in streambeds to stabilize slopes, retain sediment, and reduce flood risk. Located in narrow, accessible stream sections, the structures avoided cultivated and wide areas. The project, implemented by ETE, ATE under Hydroexygiaktiki SA, protected the downstream Marathon Lake reservoir from sedimentation, supported ecological recovery, and enhanced watershed stability with minimal environmental impact.
