MOVING Project - Trento Doc Wine Sustainability Policy

Trento Doc wine region: sustainable viticulture, tourism integration, and climate resilience in the Eastern Alps

or

Detail description

The Trento DOC wine value chain in the Eastern Alps spans 10,000 hectares across 6,300 farms, 70% of which are small-scale, producing around 800,000 hectolitres annually, including sparkling wines. The sector integrates viticulture with tourism, gastronomy, and other local agriculture, with most revenue reinvested locally. Climate change drives vineyard elevation shifts, revitalising terraced landscapes but raising concerns over water use, soil degradation, and pollution. The region supports small farmers through organic certifications, research, and initiatives like the Biodistretto di Trento. Policy recommendations focus on strengthening cross-sector integration, expanding multifunctional systems, preserving family farming, ensuring equitable water access, and investing in education and innovation to enhance resilience and sustainability.
