MOVING Project - Resilience of mountain viticulture in the Alps

Sustainable mountain wine value chains in the Alps: climate resilience and policy frameworks in Trentino

Detail description

MOVING was an EU Horizon 2020 project assessing value chains in 23 European mountain regions across 15 countries to enhance resilience and sustainability. Focusing on Trento wine production in the Eastern Alps, the project analyzed climate change impacts, extreme weather, soil degradation, rising energy costs, and demographic challenges. Small-scale vineyards, mostly under one hectare, rely on cooperative and private cellars for processing. The region promotes organic farming and low-input practices due to strong market demand and economic sustainability. Key threats include hail, heavy rain, late frosts, and labor shortages. Recommendations include adopting climate-resilient grape varieties, relocating vineyards to higher altitudes, and integrating migrant and young workers to strengthen long-term viability.
