MOVING Project - Lamb farming resilience in alpine mountain regions

Sustainable sheep farming and pasture management in Central Europe's alpine regions amid climate and economic challenges

Detail description

MOVING project explores sustainable mountain value chains in 23 European regions, focusing on the Weiz region in Austria’s Alps. This alpine pasture area supports family-run sheep farming with 18% of workers in agriculture. The Beitzer Schaffbauern cooperative, founded in 1995, unites 300 members, producing premium lamb, dairy, wool, and eco-materials. Climate change threatens feed quality via extreme weather, drought, and soil degradation. Rising costs from energy, feed, and supply chain disruptions risk undermining local production. However, demand for local, high-quality food offers resilience. Strengthening transparency, cooperation, and circular economy practices enhances sustainability and economic viability.
