Intercropping for Boosting Organic Farming in Europe

Intercropping enhances yield stability, reduces nitrogen dependency, and improves protein content in organic farming. The ReMIX project promotes multi-species cropping systems—especially wheat–legume combinations—to address challenges like pest control, weed management, and low yields. Supported by the EU’s Horizon 2020 Programme, the approach aligns with the Farm-to-Fork Strategy’s goal of 25% organic farmland by 2030. Benefits include higher bread-making quality (14% increase), reduced mechanical weeding, and lower fuel use. Key recommendations include policy incentives, market development for mixed crops, breeding for intercropping, and participatory on-farm trials.
