Lentil-oat intercropping for ecological production in Germany
Intercropping lentils with oats for sustainable, high-yield ecological production in southern Germany
or
Detail description
Lentil-oat intercropping in southern Germany enables ecologically sustainable, high-quality lentil production with improved weed suppression and harvest efficiency. Recommended practices include sowing lentils (55 kg/ha) and oats (35 kg/ha) in April at 4 cm depth, using short oat varieties to reduce competition. A single pass with a fine harrow five days after sowing helps control weeds. Harvest occurs after 120 days. Technical separation using cyclone, cylinder, gravity, and optionally optical separators is essential; shared equipment or larger-scale production reduces costs. The method supports local marketing, with 70 farmers coordinated by Lauteracher Alb-Feld-Früchte under the Albleisa brand. Suitable as a second crop after cereals or false flax, this system enhances yield stability and reduces lodging.
