World's first floating dairy farm in Rotterdam promotes sustainable, resilient agriculture with innovative practices and community engagement

or

Detail description

The world's first floating dairy farm, launched in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in 2019, responds to urban food resilience challenges. Born from Hurricane Sandy’s 2012 flooding and food shortages, it promotes sustainable farming, reduces food miles, and engages youth. The farm hosts 40 cows on a floating platform with solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and a manure separation system. It integrates tours, a farm shop, and local supply chains, supported by the COCOREADO Horizon 2020 project (2021–2024), fostering innovation in agricultural knowledge systems and youth involvement.
